Phonies - A fake person. A person who hides behind something they make up to make them seem like a better person.
"She probably knew what a phony slob he was"

Depressing as hell - To be very depressed; sad. Hearing something that irritates him is as "depressing as hell"

Holden really likes the fact that his friend Jane has come up into conversation with Stradlater. He enjoys talking about her & their fun times together. He is a guy who has a caring heart. (pg 31-35)

Holden goes to Ackley after he has a HUGE arguement with Stradlater about his date with Holden's friend Jane. He is a very scary guy when he is angry. (pg 44-46)

Holden is a liar and doesn't care about the lies he tells or who he tells it to. He obviously isn't a very caring guy. (pg 55-57)

We think Holden is a very nice guy who is a phony himself. He hides behind this "tough, i-dont-care-about-anything" kind of guy.

Michelle: I learned that they had to take valuable things with them in order for them to go through the day, such as "good luck" charms or pictures of a loved one.

Michelle: The most confusing part of the reading is the relationship with Martha & Lt. Cross. HE talks about her so much, that it seems like she doesn't exist.

Char: I learned that it was really difficult for them to carry around all the things they carried. Especially because some of the necessary things they needed were so heavy & also because they carried some of their personal belonings.

The most confusing part of the story is the role that Lt. Cross has in the story. I don't understand how the first part is mostly about him and what he carried. I do understand why they mention all the things that the other men carried but I don't get the relationship he has with Martha.

Justin
What i learned about war was that things happen quickly such as the time lavender was shot. I also learned that these people had to be there and that the conditions of living for them were not to good. They had to do alot to get through everyday.

The most confusing part of the story was when they are describing all of the weapons that they carry. All of the different types of guns and weapons that they hold were confusing me.

Micah, Daphne, and Cyn

Micah: I noticed that they didn't carry ordinary things. But they carried things that mean something to them or that was valuable. Like Kiowa, he took his bible that his father gave to him being the sunday school pastor. Knowing that when a parent like Kiowa's father gives you something & you keep it, it should mean something.

Cyn: first of all what i thought was confusing about reading this book was because I thought that Jimmy Cross was telling the story but it was actually the author. From starting to read this book I learned that about how joining the war can be a big coming of age process. War shows the difference side of you and you have to be strong for it. The things they carried with them showed who they were which helped them through the war such as a bible, letters, a lucky pebble, and thumb.

1. We all agreed that the most powerful scene from the book, from what we've read was the scene where Ted Lavender dies. This was probably the most powerful scene to us because it had the most description and was very visual. The other parts of the book were not as visual and mostly narative.

2. The insight we gained about the war was that it is a very scary thing. All of these young men are going off to war and they don't know if they'll return. It's also unexpected, like one second you think your fine, and the second you're shot down.

3. The most confusing thing about this book is how it jumps from reality to day dreams. Also, trying to figure out who's narrating. We think to solve this problem we'd just have to focus when we read and read on.

Catcher in the Rye

Phonies: A fake person who likes to pretend to be like others.
"I stopped on the way, thought, and picked up Ackley's hand, and gave him a phony handshake."

Depressing as hell: Being sad for a long time.
"What I was really hanging around for, I was trying... leaving it, if you don't, you feel even worse."

Holdenisms: He says goddam, crumby, phony, and always exaggerate.
"I stood for a while next to the stairs and took a last look down the goddam corridor."

1. Holden got kicked out of several schools that he went to. He doesn't want to go home after he got kicked out of the most recent school. He gets irrtated and aggravated at some people.

Amber- MY visual was of the part when they describe the march from town to town not really knowing who to kill and what to look for. It describes how houses are burning.

I learned that it was a pointless war and that the U.S. just likes to stick their noses in other peoples business.

Most confusing part is that it gets confusing about all the people and who they are.

Desha- My visual was of the part where the soldiers are all joking around and laughing after one of the soldiers came out safely from the tunnel then lavender gets shot out of no where.

I learned that when your in a place that you are not familiar with especially during war you have to be alert and if you forget to be alert for just a split second anything can happen and thats what happened with lavender.

The confusing part was when i started to read i would get lost with the different characters and their stories.

Raena- My visuals were about Lieutenant Cross and how he describes his love for this girl, where he talks about the letters that she sends and how he licks the envelope thinking that thats where her mouth was last.

I saw how the war affected his relationship because of the distance and he couldn't really develop their relationship because he was at war and they just stayed friends.

The confusing part was losing track of the characters and their stories.

Marissa-My visual is when the describe the memories about the things that they did to entertain each other during the war.

I learned that when in situations where you don't have anything to entertain you, you make use of what you have and your resources.

The confusing part was who the story was about and which character was which.

a) Phonies:
Phonie refers to his ideas of the society and the views that has of the people that are all around him. He thinks on them as phonies, that they're too fake.

"What I liked about her, she didn't give you a lot of horse manure about what a great guy her father was. She probably knew what a phoney slob was." -Chapter 1

This shows how he likes real people. Fake people and snobbs surround him at school. He likes her because she's not holding up a facade and acts like her fathers the greatest and she's real.

"He was at least a pretty friendly guy, Stradler. It was partly a phony kind of friendly, but at least he always said hello to Ackley and all."

He sees through peoples facades, notices the little things that they do. He's okay with hte fact that they're nice, even if it's a fake nice.

b) Depressing as hell:
It's pretty self explanitory, something thats too sad for comfort.

c) Chrissake:
It's like another "Oh my gosh"

" I don't know. For Chrissake, I just met her" - Chapter 4
This expresses the surprise and irritation of Stradlater.

d) Goddamn:
I can't believe that happened thing. Expresses irritation. (similar to Chirssake.)

"He was finished combing his gaddamn gorgeous hair" -Chapter 4
Holden Below the Surface:

1)" He was also of a nasty guy. I wasn't too crazy about him, to tell you the truth" -Chapter 3 Page 19

This quote shows that he doesn't really like his roommates and that they could be a reason why he wants to get out.
2) " I shot the bull for a while. I told him I was a real moron and all that stuff." -Chapter 2 Page 12
He was talking to get out of there, and trying to make his teacher feel better by making conversation and made it show that he understood.
3) "I'd rather call old THomans Hardy up. I like that Eustacia Vye." -Chapter 3 Page 19

THis quote shows that he likes writers, probably even more than he loves his brothers

Forgot to do last part,Continuation of post.

Holden fighting Stradlater pg.44
Once Stradlater came back to the dorm Holden asked what happened. After Holden heard about what Stradlater and jane he got made and start a fight.

This shows that Holden is not a sociable person when it come to those kinds of situations, ignorant, and never thinks before he acts.
