JOURNAL #4: College Plans

Okay! By the time you are reading this blog post, you will have completed your first essay for the year, the "coming of age" narrative.
This journal is to help you (and me) prepare for your next essay, the college application essay.
So...share your goals, wish list, anticipation, visions, hallucinations of college. Consider the following (but don't be limited by these prompts)

  1. What are you looking for in your college experience? Why? (academic, social, career, etc)
  2. Where do you hope to go to college? Why? (could be a particular college or could be a region of the country...or world)
  3. What have you heard about various colleges? (based on family, friends, your own research, etc)
  4. Anything else you'd like to add.

Post this as a comment here. Be sure to include your *real* name. Without your real name or at least a fairly recognizable nickname, I can't give you credit for the assignment.

COLLEGE PLANS

I watch a lot of shows wear they have things that have to do with college. For example, college sports teams, clubs, and parties. But that's not the only that comes to mind when I hear the word
"C-O-L-L-E-G-E." Right now, I'm planning on probably taking nursing. I never really liked the medical field, but looking at our economy, nursing is sort of an in-demand job. Also, it pays well. I really want to try going somewhere else for college besides here on Hawaii, but as of now, it looks like I'm probably going to UH or something. A few things I've heard is that it is actually better to go to a university then community colleges. I hope that there aren't any crazy people in MY college that'll shoot up the place. I'm not sure if I'm going to be staying at a dorm. Nursing takes like 2-4 years (I think), but I plan on finishing it as fast as possible. I heard if you're a full-time student, then it'll be over in 2 years. As of now, not too sure on my plans, but the things I said above are my plans as of now.

My college and career plans

First of all when I grow up I would like to become a nurse or a doctor. I would like to graduate from MOHS with honors, atleast magma or suma caumlade. With these types of honors I would probably qaulify in HPU's nursing's program. I would also like to go to the University of Toronto in Canada. I would love to go to Canada for college because I hear that they have a good nursing programs there and a lot of students who want to become doctors go to Canada for schooling. I also love Canada and the beauty of it. If not Canada my second option would be HPU. I hear that HPU has a really good nursing's program. I really want to go to college right after highschool so I can finish my liberals eary and start working on my degree. By the time im 24 I would like to be a registered nurse at Tripler. Hopefully by the time I am 30 i will be able to be a doctor. I accept the fact that college will be hard for me. There will be a lot of challenges and struggles but I hope college will help me go through those obstacles with me. I can't wait to see the diversity of college with all the different people and how the campus and lifestyle is so much more different than highschool.

From what I've seen on TV, I've seen people playing sports, joining sororities, living on dorms, partying a lot, and studying. I'm hoping that i get to experience all of those things but still be focused on school and not take advantage of being in college. I hope i go to college at University of Hawaii, or University of Washington.I want to go UH because its close to home and I could still live at home but im not sure if they have a good medical program. I want to go to University of Washington because I've heard that they have a good medial program there and I want to visit Washington but I'm just worried there might be shooting just like Virginia Tech. I've heard that the colleges in the mainland are good. Also the ones here in Hawaii. I want to be a nurse and I really hope that wherever I end up , I just hope I finish nursing school as fast as possible.

When I graduate high school, I want to attend UNLV in Las Vegas, I'm not sure why, but I love the city of Las Vegas, and I would love to attend school there! In college, career wise, I hope to find a really good career pathway to pursue in life, because as of right now I'm not sure what career I want to pursue. In college, socially I want to meet people who can help me throughout college, and can help me with my career in the future. I also want to live in a dorm room in college!!It sounds and looks fun, so it's an experience that I would love to have.

I want to go to either University of the Pacfic, Loyola Marymount University, or Seattle University to get my major in Psychology. After I get my degree, I want to get my Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology at either UH Manoa or Hilo, then after I get my masters, I want to get my PhD and become Dr. Charina Crisostomo (or whatever my last name will be by then). =D

When I go to college, I would love to have at least some sort of social life, but i really don't care much for all the crazy parties that are portrayed in TV shows or movies.

I think I want to start off as a high school counselor or social worker or something like that. Then eventually, after I get my PhD, I want to start my own practice. ;D

For my college experience I want to learn all the skills that will help me to have a career in musical theater. I also want to meet people that will help me get there. Musical theater is very hard career to succeed at and I want to know that in college I will be able to achieve my goal. Along with meeting life longs friends and experiencing the independent "college life".

For college I've thought of many options. So far I have narrowed it to 4 choices.

1) Tisch School of Arts at NYU
2) The Juilliard School of Arts
3) Indiana University
4) University of California, Los Angeles

The first 2 colleges are both located in New York City. Which is where I would like to pursue my goal. I feel that if I attend a college near the environment I want to be, it could make it easier for me to balance school and a career.

Indiana University is a prestigious school for vocal training. People that graduate from this school usually have a lot of respect in musical theater.

The last choice is at ULCA. This is one a little safer cause I'm much closer to home and I have a lot of relatives who live in the area. They have one of the better musical theater programs in the west coast.

I haven't really thought much about college yet, other than I want to go some where out of state. Thinking about the college experience and graduating from childhood kind of excites and scares me at the same time. Yes I want college to be a fun experience and I great chapter in my life. But at the same time I expect it to be and opportunity to strengthen my skills, have new and unique learning experiences, and to just prepare me for true adult hood.
Every time I would think about college I would think of West Coast and living on the West Coast. I love that area it's just so beautiful and some schools their are amazing. For example Seattle University, Academy of Arts in San Fran, and AI (Arts Institute). But I've also heard of a college in Canda called Trinity that offers some programs in the field I'm thinking about going into. I am considering out of the country because from what I've heard it's way cheaper schooling in Canada.
All in all, I am just curious, nervous, and excited for the esperience. Knowing that it's only two years away makes me anxious and frightened by the idea of leaving home.

Well honestly, I never really thought that far ahead, I've kinda been avoiding it. My sister, Donna, has been pressing college, and it hasn't just been since freshman year... She expects somuch from me, it's kinda scary.... I don't really like the idea of being on my own... It's been haunting me, sometimes I can hear her "You know moms no going to support you. She can't afford your tuition after paying for Joycee Girls, they're in debt right now. You have to find a way to pay for it now."
I guess, I have to.

I want to do something that I'm really interested and is pretty stable, but I don't know what i want to do... I've been thinking about going into astronomy, because I used to like it. Right now, I don't know though, it hasn't been my focus. Maybe, something with math! It's the only thing I'm really good at,though I don't know if it's something I want to do for the rest of my life.

I've heard about Goddard College, it's space science and astronomy, from a lecture. and that UH Manoa has a Institute for Astronomy, and I even know Ms. Kadooka there from personal experience. But I think I need to think about it.

I'm looking to get a career out of college because I need to be able to find a stable job and support myself.

I really hope to go to college somewhere in the north east or at least the east coast. My family lives there and I just really like the east coast better and have my heart set on that. I would like to live there after I graduate, so I'm content on going to college there too.

I have heard from my family that the colleges in the north east are the most expensive, and that's not what I'm looking for- I don't feel like I need to go to the best college, and especially the most expensive. SU (Syracuse Univ.) is a great college according to everyone but it's also very expensive. My brother went there but he had an ROTC scholarship. I'm not sure if I would be interested but I'll keep that option open.

What I look for in a college is good academic classes, sports, and things that can be enjoyable to me. But not only do I want to have fun, I want to concentrate on school to get my Bachelors degree. I'm not fully sure what I want to be when I grow up, but I'm thinking about becoming either a teacher or a graphic designer. The college I might want to go to is somewhere in the mainland, but I want to go somewhere where they have one of the best classes in my field. I want to be someone that is important, but also successful. The things I heard about college was that its great because the classes are very interesting and it teaches you all that you need to know. But I don't really know that much about college, all I know is what I see on T.V, which is parites, sorority houses, dorms, and classes. At first, I wanted to be able to go to a college and experience living in a soroity house because I just wanted to know what it must be like. Because I haven't really thought about college, I want to just be able to get myself through and maybe things will just work out. All I want to do is make sure that I become successful in college and career goals.

Since I could remember I've always wanted to help and inspire people, but could never find a middle ground. I plan to go to college and am very excited to experience the college life. But my main priority is to really just do something that will both support me financially and that I could enjoy. I really want to go to a nursing college or to a performing art school to pursue a job in either pediatric nursing or as a composer and singer. I am open to exploring other jobs that will suit me. So far music and the medical field are the only industries or careers that I could see myself doing. I’m just really excited to see what options I’ll have.

I never really thought about what College I wanted to go to, or what I'm going to take up when I go to college. All I know is what pathway best suits me. My parents really want me to become a nurse but I don't completly agree with them, I mean the pay is great but I didn't really want to be part of the medical field.I would, but that would be like my second choice. Many people have their own opinions on where to go to college, I hear alot of people say go to college in the maindland there are many more oppurtunities, but its not like there isn't any here and I want to go to college here because its near home. My goal is become a full time student and go to college right after high school,University, Community College whether its down here or up in the mainland somwhere.

In college people play sports, having sororities, living in dorms, partying, and studying thats the typical college life, I hope to experience all of that but keep in mind that I'm not only going to college for the fun,but know that I need to focus and study hard graduate and have a good career.

When I go to college, I expect it to be very challenging and I’m not going to be able to breeze right through it unfortunately. But I am willing to take on whatever college has for me. I also kind of expect to have a lot of fun but you know fun come second ;) There will also I think be a lot of stress with turning in work and with other activities I plan to do in college.

The schools that are in my mind right now any way is the University of the Pacific in Stockton California and possibly Stanford University. But I want to basically stay somewhere on the west coast.

I’m not really sure what major I would like to take during college but it would be something that is like hands on, outdoors well maybe like something to do with athletics.

Having Ms. Mau come during period 4 in class today and spending the entire period talking to us about college, it really got me thinking. Previously, I've already planned out all my courses for my next two years in high school. But after today, I've made some changes.

In my college experience, I'm expecting to meet new people (obviously). Academically, I seek to learn everything that I need to do well in the career I choose. I'm expecting my first couple years in college to be more stressful than it was for me for my freshman year in high school, having to adjust to the environment and teaching methods.

At the moment, I'm not sure about what college i want to attend. I'm thinking about taking up nursing, but I'm not sure if I want to go to college in the mainland or stay here in the islands. I would attend college in the mainland, but I'm so afraid of the people there and I'm probably going to be homesick.

My family wants me to go to the mainland for college so that I can challenge myself and expose myself to the world and its people other than the locals in this little island.

-My dream college experience was to meet a lot of new people and make lots of new friends. But besides the social life, I wanted to take business classes. I wanted to get ready to have my own business as a hairdresser. I have a passion for playing with hair and having my own hair salon is my key option to what I want to be when I grow up. I want to be a good student academically. To my knowlege, I will have to take Genereal ED, so I also want to do good in that.

My prefered college areas are New York City or Los Angeles. I prefer these places because of the atmosphere. I have always wanted to know what it feels like to live there and that would be a great experience. For my cosmetology license/ degree, I would like to attend Aveda Intstitute. I know that Aveda is located in New York but I'm unsure about Califoria.

My sister enjoys her college experience at San Jose State Univerity. The area around the school is also very "liveable". My family memebers said that college is a very fun time of your life but it is also very stressful. You always have to be "on top of your game.

I'm really excited to be thinking about college because I think it's a good time to start preparing for our future.

Kellyann,

What I'm looking for in my college experience is learning to be independent & on my own without my parents. Also, I want to get educational use that'll get me to were I want to go. My college exeperience will get me more social & connect with culture diversities that I can't experience here in Hawaii.
Well, I'd love to go to a college in Seattle, Washington because its one of my favorite cities. I don't want to go to an East Coast school because it's too far from home. Particularly, Seattle University or University of Washington (UDub). They have a business & industry program which is the pathway I'm aiming for.
Based on family relation, I mainly hear about colleges in Hawaii. My cousins love it because its close to home & it still prepares them for life. Also, the way professors teach is the way my cousins learn.
I'd like to add that I may change my mind later but right now, its set that I'm off to the mainland for college. I love Hawaii & all but I'd like to test myself & see how I can branch out.

Wow are we really talking about college already or is it just me. I still can't believe it it was middle school, then graduation, freshmen year in high school, and now this. Now college applications.

My future career is maybe nursing. I still have some think on what else to do. But I have not been a fan of the medical and science field. But I will try my best. If something is hard it will always help you in the long run.
Anyway I have been thinking about college of and on. Like what job will I take in the future. What college to go to. For a while now I have though about it and there are some areas in the world I would want to chose. Like Washington cause I have heard good things about and also I have a family member and also my parents have been think about moving there. But if i don't go there then there is Hawaii/HPU. But ya I still have some thinking to do but. I can't wait for college to come.

College is a scary ting to me. Im just getting through high school but I do look foward to going to college. I always heard colloge is the "testing the waters" phase of your life, but now-a-days those start pretty early. But i know its a lot of partying,A LOT of studying, and hard work. I would love to go to a college close to home or somewhere that is near by an ocean:) Somewhere in Cali, florida, or even Washington. I reallt want to go to college and GRADUATE, my mom didn't graduate and i hope that I can stick it out. As of what i want to do..i have no clue what classes i would like to take or what profession i want to pursue, but I have a few years to figure that out:)

I am planning to go up to the mainland for college like California because I want to experience life up there and I also I want to gain independence because I will be on my own. I wish to build friendships with my classmates and professors because we will all share the same desires and same interests. Also it would be really nice to meet different people from all over the US and even some other country and what they have to teach and learn.
I wish to get into the media fields but I’m not really sure what I want to do in it. But my back up plan is to be a nurse in laser clinics because I want to help people because I had the same experience in laser surgery right now.
Right now as I’m still wondering about what I want to be and do for my career I am also looking through colleges.
I am really nervous about college because I know it’s a big amount of money and I won’t be going to school for free anymore. I have to actually work really hard and discipline myself. I know it will take time so it’s up to my decisions right now to choose how far in life I want to go

What I am hoping for in college is an experience that can last forever. Also one that will give the learnings that I need for a career that I would like to go for. Right now, the career plan that I have in mind is to continue to be in the Arts and Communication Course. I am not sure which course of this program I would like to take. I am thinking about being a webpage designer or work with graphics.

I am not sure which college I would like to go to, but I heard that there is a good college in New York that has a great Film School, maybe I will look over there. But if I can't get into there, then maybe one that has at least graphics.

If I am able to get any scholoarship for any college, for sports, either volleyball or basketball, I would take that scholoarship because at least I would be able to get into a college and then I can always change my career path to something else because there are a lot of other jobs out there that I probably don't know about.

for my college experience i hope to get a good job and learn about things that i would need to know in order to get a good stable job. I also hope to meet new people and see their thoughts about college and their future. and i would want to try and keep on task and do all my homework and pass it and get a college degree.

i dont really know what college i would want to go but, i was thinking maybe like one in california . But i might not have the money for that. so i will probably end up going to lcc or a community college. i have visited colleges when i went on trips such as unlv, and some others in reno , washington , and oregon, and new york.

i havent really heard much about the colleges but they are supposedly all good colleges. i would need to do some research so i can make up my mind of which college i would like to attend.

thats pretty much as much as i know about colleges and stuff.
