For Friends, we think Holden hides who he really is when he is around them. Also, it seems as if he doesn't like anything they do. Everything they do, like sitting down in a chair or shaving, he gets easily bothered by. Holden created a personality of "not caring" and hides behind it and doesn't show the "caring" side of him.
For family, Holden misses them so much. He cares about his little sister Sophie and wants to see her so bad but the fact that that would lead to talking to his parents. Holden seems to not have the best relationshoip with them. He only disappoints and I guess he doesn't know what else he can do.
For institutions or cooncepts, Holden seems to have a perspective on everything and you can tell where he stands on things. You can also tell what he thinks are unimportant. He doesn't let things get to him easily but him saying what he thinks of school or phonies shows the kind of personality he has or pretends to have.
Confusing Part:
Alexis -
Q: When he was talking to Old Spencer. What was going on?
A: Old Spencer was trying to get to Holden and change his perspective on school and life. Although, maybe it didn't work.
Niki -
Q: I don't get who all these people are. Who is Sophie and Jane?
A: Sophie is Holden's little sister and Jane is Holden's old time friend?
Kelly -
Q: Why does Holden want to know about where the ducks go ?
A: They haven't really said why but maybe its because he relates to him.
Jisel -
Q: Why does Holden always blow up on Stradlater?
A: Apparently, everything Stradlater does seems to bother Holden. Also, the fact that Stradlater went out with Jane because Holden knows he isn't all that great of a guy.
Word:
Alexis: qualm
Niki: sonouvabtch
Kelly: grand
Jisel: phony

We all agreed that the quote truly shows the essence of this book in ways that were unclear to us before. After reading it, we thought more deeply into what exactly the author wants us to see in his novel.
The the author beautifully sums up what the war was like, how it looked, and how it made them feel. Most misunderstand what goes on in a war, we only see the bloody truths. But on the other hand, the war, like many other things, is a huge condradiction to itself. Sometimes things just flow into the other too much that you cant even make out the differnce any more and things start to lose meaning.
Yes the war was ugly, but there was a certain beauty. Abiguity is a perfect word that he uses to sum up a whole lot, because this word is the essence of not ever knowing and having doubts. No one is ever not filled with doubts, and that is the scariest thing, not knowing, and what stories you can get out of the expirences of finding out.
Amber- Who is the narrarator?
a:Tim O'Brien, but he's also the author.
Desha- What was the point of him telling the stories of him and the girl that doesn't love him?
A:Because this book means to show us that the war is not only confined to shootings and gory things but the war consumes and affects all of ones being.
Raena: What significance is the rainy river to the story?
A:It tells how he went through hell with shame because he didn't want to join the war and fought with himself, but finally decided to go.
Marisa- Is why does he want to tie her down and hold her knee?
A:We think hes a little weird, but also we think its supposed to be poetic and romantic in some way.HA
Amber:ambiguity
Desha:dimension
Raena:ambitions
Marisa:insufficient

Friends: Holden can be himself around them. Although he seems to be annoyed with what they do infront of him. Example: Ackley cuts his nails on the floor instead of over the table. Stradlater's razor leaves gunk all over.
Family: He misses them a lot, especially his sister. He has the urge of calling her but it'll lead to talking to his parents. He's afraid to talk to his parents because it'll lead to them finding out about him getting kicked out of school again.
Institutions or Concepts: Holdens seems like the type of guy who doesn't like phonies. It seems to be that he doenst care much about school either but he has a way of pretending to like it.
Confusing Part:
Thea
Q: What happened between Holden and Stradlater that lead into a big fight?
A: Holden wrote Stradlater's paper about a glove instead of a room or house and what happened on Stradlater's date with Jane.
Austin
Q: What is so special about Jane Gallagher?
A: She is an old friend of Holden's that he used to always hang out with over the summer.
Jonas
Q: Where do the ducks go when the lake is frozen?
A: It doesn't say just yet but it could probably relate to him in some way.
Samara
Q: Why doesn't he have the urge to call his sister Sohpie?
A: If he calls his sister, then his parents will want to talk to him and soon find out he got expelled.
Word
Thea: goddam
Austin: crummy
Jonas: sonouvabitch
Samara: phony

Friends= See as how Holden is annoyed by most of friends like Ackley and Stardlater. He also keep in his bad feelings about his friends and usually if he gets mad at them and gets him made. Ackley irritates him by being so disgusting like never brushing his teeth, cutting his toe nails in front of him, and always have to be told more than once. Stradlater always being a pretty boy and asking Holden to do favors for him.
Family=Well for his family he always wants to be with. Such as his sister Sophie who he wants to call be if he does and his mom answers he will just hang up. The mom would know it is him. Also he misses he brother the died of luekemia. :[
Institutions and Concept= Looks like that Holden hates being around people such as phonies. he always has a backside story for anyone he knew. He isn't much of an achiever he likes to chill out and do what every he wants. I mean go off To New York by yourself.(Thats crazy!!!!)
Q:Kaimi: What does Holden keep saying to the cab driver he mets?
A: Do you know where the ducks go off after the lake is frozen over.
Q:Kelvin: What was the relationship between Holden and Jane?
A: The used to be a couple or just good friends.
Q: Kirsten: Who where the people they meet in the Club Holden first night in New York?
A:The people from Seattle Washington and one was a dancer and the other one as tricked by Holden that there was a star in the club that left.
Q:Kiana; Why did Holden fight Stardlater?
A: Stardlater went out with Holden old friend Jane. Holden got mad because of what Stadlater did with her on the date.
Kelvin: sonavab*tch
Kirsten:phonies
Kiami:Depressing as hell
Kiana:crummy
I think the quote fits the theme of the book because it shows that when soldiers go to war the things they go through stays with them forever.
Most of the soldiers that went to war, saw people get killed and injured right in front of them. Seeing those kind of things made the yound soliders grow up and "come of age." Going to war made the soliders see everything in a different way, and the quote describes that.
Destrie-
The insight I gained about the coming of age is that when you go to war, not only does your whole life change, but your whole perspective on everything changes.
Q:Who is the narrator?
A:Tim O'Brien, not only is he the author but the narrator too.
Words:Ambition, Spookiness, Silence
